SCOPE attends Aboriginal Health Fair

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

On November 4th, SCOPE and Healthy Abbotsford had the pleasure to take part in the Mámele’awt Aboriginal Family Health Fair. The event was well attended by all age groups and included information booths from local agencies such as Fraser Health, the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Metis Skills and Employment Center and the Abbotsford Youth Commission. Participants learned about topics such as making healthy food choices, controlling diabetes, physical activity, traditional healing and mental health.

This was our first opportunity to showcase the new SCOPE 5-2-1-0 guideline, which was well received by participants. Many parents and children were drawn in by our healthy eating display which provided visuals of proper serving sizes based on Canada’s food guide, as well as displays showing the amount of sugar added to pop. Parents asked great questions and shared their stories about encouraging their children to eat healthy and get active.

SCOPE and Healthy Abbotsford would like to thank the Mámele’awt Aboriginal Education Center and Fraser Health for hosting such a wonderful event and inviting us to take part.
